Fire Department

About Us

Organized in 1910 as a bucket brigade, the City of Hartwell Fire Department has developed into one of the premiere small town departments in the Southeast, boasting an unprecedented Class 2 ISO fire rating.

With a total of thirty-six firefighters, Hartwell's fire service is considered a combination department, utilizing a full-time staff, complemented by on-call personnel.  All fire personnel are well trained in all aspects of fire protection, as well as emergency medical, hazardous materials and heavy rescue responses, with all personnel receiving training far beyond state requirements.  The department maintains the most up-to-date equipment, operating with four engine companies and two ladder companys.

In addition to fire suppression, the City of Hartwell Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau teaches fire safety education classes to children and adults, investigates all fires, and actively inspects new and existing structures for unsafe conditions.

The City's Building Inspection Department also operates under the Fire Department.  Plans are reviewed for all new construction, permits are issued upon approval of plans for all construction, including alterations and renovations to buildings, and all electrical, plumbing and mechanical installations.  Inspections are then made throughout all phases of construction. To contact the Building Official call 706-856-3209 or the Building Inspector call 706-856-3210.
